Google Global Extension For Chrome
Last week, due to popular demand, we quietly released the beta version of our Google Global extension. We have had some really encouraging feedback from you guys like “The only reason I’m still using Firefox is because of your extension”. Well now you can finally let Firefox go :)
The extension, while still in beta is a little more limited than the Firefox extension as a result of our lack of access to the new API. This means that country selection in search results will not be available through the context menu until the next release. For now, the region selection and settings are only available in the incredibly innocuous icon to the top right of the Chrome taskbar. Our user testing has showed that this is the best place for it and I think you will agree.
You can install Google Global for Chrome by clicking the image below which will take you to the official Chrome extension gallery.
If you install, use and like this extension, we would really appreciate if you could rate it over on the official page. Any feedback or feature requests are always welcome too (we are working on a Bing version, what are we going to call it then?!). If you would like to install the more complete version for Firefox, please head on over to Google Global page in our Internet Marketing Tools section.
Finally, we work hard to maintain these free tools. You would be doing us a huge favor if you could help us spread the word. Any retweet, stumble, Facebook share or a share of any social network of your choice would make us very happy and will drive us to complete the other free internet marketing tools that we have in the pipeline.

Now this is just great. And now I have one less reason to use FireFox so regularly. Thanks for sharing this great tool with the community, it’s very generous of Redfly.

No, thank YOU for the kind words Paul. Glad you like it. It’s a huge pain not having the context menu option but it will certainly be available in the next release (and when people upgrade Chrome). The option just wasn’t available in the version of Chrome we were porting to. Still in beta so there’s a long way to go.
Hopefully once Bing and Yahoo merge and with the release of the new Bing advanced operators “API”, we’ll be able to make this work with all three search engines.
As I mentioned in the post, I don’t know what we’ll call it then though. Maybe “Search Global”? Not very imaginative…

Keep it up guys! Nice that you released it instead of waiting for Yahoo!/Bing merger or polishing the rough edges.
In the meantime, we can try it out (thousands of us!) and request new features instead of you releasing a well-polished extension only to find out that the community wants more features. Makes sense?
Anyways, gave a shout about the extension at my blog, hope it helps -

Wow Amit, thanks so much. That’s a fantastic review. Glad you appreciate us pushing it out now rather than hold off for something a little more “rounded”. Any feature requests, please, no matter what they are, send them along. If they help you, they will help someone else too. We’ll be happy to include them.

Well done getting this included in the 30dc – should push up your links and visitors.

Hey Leslie,
Thanks. Yea, we released it just in time. The Firefox extension was included as a requirement for last years 30DC. So far, this year, we’ve seen the same spike in traffic, about twice as much.
RSS and FB fans getting a nice boost too.
I remember I was living in Germany when I released the very first version of this years ago. Never thought anyone would be interested. So happy I was wrong.
Our next new free app will be released next or the following week and the iPod/iPhone app is in development.

It was always awesome. Faster and cleaner. Unfortunately, the data collection is not something I am a fan of.
I think they’re just getting everyone used tot he Chrome OS UI. Smart move IMHO.
Hopefully FF4 will be able to compete.

But, as far I know, Chrome is opensource. What’s the problem in access to API?
Reply
Basically, when we started to develop this for the LAST stable version of Chrome, the extension API didn’t allow easy access to the context menu in the way we wanted. That’s why it’s not included.
It is available now, so it will be included in the next release.

I’m on the lookout for more reasons to get away from Firefox. I finally relented and downloaded Google Chrome the other day. This extension will be a new help.
Thanks,
Mike

Tom, thanks fir the kind words. While I personally try to decrease my dependencies on Google as much as I can (You wouldn’t think it would you?), Chrome is becoming more mature and I feel may become the most popular browser.
Chrome is just a warm up for ChromeOS which I think is going to be a LOT more popular than we think it is.
